Is The Reading Center the right fit for my student?

The Reading Center has nationally recognized expertise in Orton-Gillingham, a structured reading instruction for the remediation of students with dyslexia. Reading Center tutors are trained in our Academy-accredited Orton-Gillingham Training Institute and have demonstrated the high level of proficiency needed to work with dyslexic students.

Dyslexia is a demonstrated difficulty with reading accurately and fluently, spelling, and writing effectively. Dyslexia is a narrow diagnosis (phonological processing, rapid naming, word-level reading, spelling) but it affects a broad range of individuals. Dyslexia affects people with average, high, or low IQs. Dyslexia also often presents in students with other learning challenges such as ADHD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, autism spectrum disorder, and sensory processing disorder.

While the Orton-Gillingham (structured literacy) approach is one that has been shown to benefit all struggling readers, The Reading Center‘s expertise lies with students who have a primary diagnosis of dyslexia where literacy (reading, spelling, writing) challenges are the foremost areas of concern.

A typical Reading Center student must: (1) demonstrate appropriate behavior for group or individual lessons and (2) have sustained attention for the length of an average Orton Gillingham lesson, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

For students with multiple diagnoses, we find that students have success in our program when reading presents as their primary difficulty. Our tutors do not have the training necessary to develop and implement lessons for students with more complex learning profiles. If your child has unmitigated attention issues, behavior, or social challenges that interfere with learning, we would be happy to provide a referral to another provider; please contact our Program Navigator for assistance.
